Newquay's Russell Winter Just Denied in Relentless Title Pursuit at Fistral

RUSSELL Winter produced an excellent performance to become the first British surfer to reach the semi-finals of the Relentless Boardmasters championships at Fistral Beach on Sunday.
The 34-year-old Newquay favourite wowed his home crowd and was only narrowly beaten at the last four stage by eventual winner, Marc Lacromare.
Winter seemed to have the edge over Lacromare in an exciting semi-final before the Frenchman staged a stunning comeback to deny the Newquay ace a place in the final.
Lacromare later clinched the title after beating New Zealander Jay Quinn by a narrow margin of 14.73 to 14.50.
Contest director Dave Reed said: "Russell only narrowly got defeated, in one of the last waves in his heat.
"If you're not in the right position when the wave does come through and somebody else gets it, then he's going to have the opportunity to score big points, and unfortunately for Russell that's what happened."
Reed added: "We've had a fantastic event this year and seen some fantastic surfing.
"We want to go forward with this event and make it bigger and better next year."
Knocked out
Winter's team-mate Reubyn Ash was knocked out in the quarter-finals while Sam Lamiroy went out in the fourth round.
Winter had impressed throughout, seeing off South African world number 30 Travies Logie in the last 16.
Alan Stokes, also based in Newquay, reached the last eight, using their knowledge of the local conditions at Fistral to help their progress.
In the first round heat, Winter eased through, picking up the highest heat score of the day – 15.33 – as he made light work of his passage into round two.
