Russell Winter Surf Coaching weekends are aimed at people who can already surf, but are looking to improve by coaching from the best UK surfer ever.
Russell Winter has been the English, British, and European Champion, and was the first European to gain a place on the World Championship Tour, where he has even beaten Kelly Slater on three separate occasions – regarded by many as the greatest surfer ever.
The weekend is a fantastic opportunity to learn from a genuine pro, whose vast experience - coupled with the latest coaching techniques from the UK and Australia - is guaranteed to see your surfing improve.
The weekend will offer four-in-water coaching sessions, so each surfer is given individual tips, video analysis sessions from professional videographer Sam Buckle, a goodie bag from event sponsors, individual prizes for most improved riders, post-surf barbecue, DVD footage of riding to take home, the option of professional photographs, and a coach’s report of personal improvements required and how to go about achieving goals based on the weekend’s performance.
Russell said: “It is always fantastic to see how quickly people develop over the coaching weekends and the level of fun they have doing it. Increasing your ability in the water has a direct knock-on to a surfer’s enjoyment, and seeing your riding improve increases your confidence and positivity on each wave.”
Russ's coaching team includes some of the country's top surfers, who split the group down into rider-ability levels so each rider is taught from the right point. If there are elements of surfing the rider is keen to focus on, be it paddling, wave selection, cutbacks, re-entries or even airs and tube riding, the team can go through this with them step by step. Everything from wave selection, which board is best to improve on and how to correctly wax up is included in the course. It is not a boot camp, it’s about improving in a laid back environment and having fun.
All members of the coaching team are fully insured professionals who have many years of experience. They are all qualified lifeguards and certified surf instructors who can help with every aspect of surfing, from buying the right kit to choosing a travel destination.
Russ added: “We always have a great bunch of guys and girls on the course, and I look forward to meeting everyone and putting in a couple of days’ worth of hard work in to improve their riding. Surfing is one of the most enjoyable things you can ever do, and I hope after the weekend is over the techniques learned can be put in to practice every session after.”
The weekend costs £159 and places can be booked on the website at englishsurfschool.com/booking_form.php, or by calling 01637 879571.
The Rip Curl English Surfing Federation (ESF) Surf School is based on Headland Road, overlooking Newquay's famous Fistral Beach, and offers daily surf and bodyboard lessons, coasteering experiences and surf equipment hire. It also specialises in event weeks and weekends to help surfers, bodyboarders, wave skiers, girl surfers, and silver surfers improve through top quality small-group coaching with photography and video analysis.
The school is the only centre in North Cornwall to hold a British Surfing Association (BSA) Centre of Excellence Award. The Rip Curl ESF Surf School also organises and finances the English surfing team each year to compete in the junior and open European Surfing Championships. As surfing in England receives no government funding, the Rip Curl ESF Surf School supports the sport from the root to the fruit.
