THE Dart Gig Club, Paignton Rowing Club and the River Teign Rowing Club all entered two crews for the end-of-season finale in Newquay, the Men's County Gig Championships.
The format of a pool of gigs chosen for similarity of performance was familiar. What was new was that these gigs were newer, lighter and faster than those in previous years. Racing was quick and exciting as a result.
An adjusted course which had a longer first leg of around seven minutes ensured less tangles around the first mark than in previous years, while the overall distance of two-and-a-quarter miles was retained.
The weather gave all contestants a chance to give their best – fairly flat water, mild rather than hot temperatures and no rain. The men's champs had the best of it once again!
Teign's first opportunity to row was for the A crew in race eight of the first round – on paper a tough draw with all six crews having similar performances during the past season.
Graham Hill, Chris Connell, Simon Putt, Dunstan Ferris, Rupert Holliday, Simon Hounsell and cox, Kate Barczok, lined up prepared to battle hard for the third placing needed to progress to the next round.
After a good start, they settled into a powerful, effective stroke and pulled away from the other crews, gradually increasing their lead around the course to win the race with relative ease.
Teign's B crew had a yet tougher draw in the 11th race. Tom Cooke, Paul Free, Jamie Beaulah, Henry Trett, Ian Donohue, Dave Johnson and cox, Rachel Holgate, had a nervous start and then had to work hard to get back with the fleet.
By the first mark, some distance had been made up, but Teign B were unable to get back into contention for the required top-three placing. A tidy race finish was the end of their championships for this year, finishing 63rd overall.
Paignton men's A crew of Tony Bateman, Shaun Pedley, Tim Colliver, Jeff Wills, Mark Palk, Pete Scoble and cox Sandra Pedley, qualified for the second round from their heat by taking third place.
Unfortunately, Paignton men's B crew of Paul Tucker, Lee Marshall, Alex Pedley, Tim Porosa, Matt Scoble, Simon Pedley and cox Amy Plowman, despite a very good row, were fourth. That meant that they were out of the competition and placed 47th overall out of the 91 crews.
Dart's men's A crew of Dave Sharam, Andy Pomeroy, Matthew Atkins, Chris Gayle, Carlos Minto and cox Colin Brown, qualified for the second round from their heat.
Dart B - Steve Marshal, Jon Pope, Jonny Holmes, Paul Kurnet, Dave Morralley, Andy Thomas and cox Clare Thorp - were eliminated and placed 63rd overall.
In the second round the Dart A crew just failed to make the quarter-finals and were placed 29th overall.
Teign's A crew were on to race in the last race of the second round. Unfortunately for them, a breeze sprang up and times slowed through the round; with theirs being the last race, it was a real disadvantage.
The crew had another great race with excellent rowing and teamwork achieving a good second place, however with the first placed crew and 16 fastest losers going through, they were 12 seconds off the time to progress and were awarded joint 26th place with Roseland's B crew.
Paignton A were drawn in the same race with Caradon A, Salcombe A, Truro B, Newquay B and Teign A. With a good race, Paignton crossed the line in third place, but unfortunately their time was not fast enough to qualify for the quarter-finals and they were placed 41st overall.
The second day of racing was pacy and exciting with the eventual winners being the Caradon A crew. Caradon B were second and Mounts Bay A third.
