WENDRON ALLIGATORS O NEWQUAY A.F.C. O
In a pulsating and hugely entertaining encounter at Underlane, the Wendron Alligators drew their second game of the season, against a well organised and disciplined Newquay side, who before this game were top of the La Liga League.
The Alligators should have taken the lead inside the first five minutes when Max Pattle, from just inside the Newquay half, found Sam Young creating an angle with a diagonal run. Pattle slid the ball invitingly into Youngs path. From outside the area, Young, with a shimmy and a feint, beat two defenders, but uncharacteristically placed the ball wide of the goal as Newquay keeper Tadhg McClain bore down on him.
In the midfield their was a wonderful contest between the Alligators Sam Young and Newquays Harry Downing. In size it was a complete mismatch, with Downing towering over Young. Young however never let his opponents size bother him and kept Newquays playmaker shackled for most of the game.
With the action flowing from end to end, whenever Newquay approached the Alligators penalty area, they found defenders Sam Collins and James Mitchell in outstanding form and unwilling to let anyone pass.
Unable to get in behind the Alligators defence Newquay resorted to shots from long distance and this nearly paid off when from 20 yards out, Harry Downing let fly and hit the Alligators crossbar before rebounding away to safety.
The Alligators then had two chances in quick succession, Maxwell Everard shooting wide from distance and Max Pattle doing the same.
On twenty minutes Newquay had another shot which was courageously blocked on the edge of the area by Sam Collins.
The half-finished with Maxwell Everard beating two defenders on the Newquay dead ball line. As he went to lay the ball back, referee James Collins blew his whistle for half time.
The Alligators started the second half brightly with the best move of the game. James Mitchell, winning the ball on the edge of his area, passed the ball forward to Jordon Greet, Greet moved the ball quickly inside to Sam Young, who in turn placed the ball in front of Max Pattle. As Pattle bore down on goal a Newquay defender racing back done just enough to force Pattle to shoot straight at keeper McClain.
Newquay responded a few minutes later when Connor Mcgrath with yet another long-range shot, beat Alligators keeper Robbie Richards, but again rattled the bar and bounced down safely for Richards to collect.
As the game drew to a close Harry Roberts, who had a fine game for the Alligators, again fought his way into the Newquay penalty area, but once more the Newquay defence did a fine job of blocking his shot.
COACHES COMMENTS. ‘Newquay are a big, strong physical side and hard to play against. With better finishing we could have won the game, but I’m really pleased with a clean sheet against a side who scored ten goals in their last game, and who on the Newquay website ‘Newquay people’ lay claim to believing they can win La Liga this season!
For now, our ambitions are justifiably a little more humble. We have been promoted into the top under 11s division and in our opening two games have performed very well.
As I said at the outset of this season, on our day I believe we can compete with any team in this division, but we are still a team very much in the ‘learning how to play football’ stages of our development. A work in progress.
That said, as a winner I would love the Alligators to win this league, but as a realist I would be delighted if we were able to break into the top five of La Liga.
Unlike our first game against Penzance where I felt it was two points dropped, this was very much a deserved point won. It’s a good point won, against a good side and we are starting to settle into the top division. ‘But it’s early days and there’s a long way to go, so as always, we must just keep our feet on the ground, don’t get too excited and keep showing the same discipline, enthusiasm, commitment and attitude. If we can do that, then we will enjoy our season in La Liga.
Coach Danny Everard.
