The record field of five hundred and eighteen runners, just one more than last year, who lined up for last Sunday morning's Newquay 10K, sponsored by Studs Sports, can count themeslves lucky, as the overnight rain eased, the wind abated and conditions proved ideal for the race, round fourteen of the Cornwall Glass and Glazing Cornish Grand Prix Series.

Ollie Gibson (Newquay Road Runners) was the local favourite, but soon after the start, the vest of Swansea Harriers, worn by Afan Humphries, was setting the pace. By the two mile mark, Humphries led Gibson by one hundred metres, with the Cornwall Athletic Club pair Matt Pullen, still nursing an achilles injury from the summer and Tony Dunn, running alongside St Austell's Dan Alsop in the chasing group.

The talented Welsh athlete dug deep on the gently incline to the high point of the course at three miles, before stretching his lead on the fast, mostly downhill section to the five mile point, with Gibson now one hundred and fifty metres adrift. Changes were happening behind, as Alsop lost contact with the pair of Cornwall Athletic Club runners and a very fit Dunn, eased clear of a less fit Pullen, as the leaders approached the main road back to Newquay and the finish at the Sports Centre.

The top five positions remained unchanged to the line, as Humphries extended his winning margin to half a minute, with Dunn closing the gap but failing to catch Gibson. Pullen comfortably held onto fourth, with Alsop clear of the Under 20 winner, Dan Nash (East Cornwall Harriers), in fifth place.

Cornwall Athletic Club's Men's team, already crowned the 2010 Grand Prix team champions, won their eleventh team race of the year, with St Austell Running Club beating their Mid Cornwall rivals, Newquay Road Runners, to the silver medals by a narrow seven point margin.

Emma Stallard (Cornwall Athletic Club) returned to the Cornwall Grand Prix racing scene after missing the last race and once again proved unstoppable, winning her nineth Grand Prix race in 2010, this time by over one minute, ahead of one of the sprinkling of visitors at the race, Amanda Crook (Southport Waterloo Athletic Club), with the Veterans 40-44 winner, Zelah Morrall in third place. Emma finished sixteenth overall, good enough to be the top three scoring runners in the Men's A team of all clubs, except her own home club.

The Ladies team race proved to be a close run thing, with twelve points separating the top three. Mounts Bay Harriers, fresh from their win in the last race, the Treggy 7, came close to winning their third Grand Prix race of the year, falling just four points short of toppling the victorious Cornwall Athletic Club quartet. Hard on the heels of Mounts Bay were the host club, Newquay Road Runners, finishing third, just eight points behind the Penwith based Ladies.
