Wellington were made to fight hard for a win against Western Counties West bottom side Newquay, who belied their league position with a spirited display.
The seasonal layoff, combined with cancellations due to the weather, made for a slow start to the match by the home side with the visitors able to spoil possession and generally slow play down. This, combined with the astute tactical kicking of the obviously experienced fly half Roger Milsom, meant the crowd saw very little entertaining action for the first quarter of an hour - during which the visitors went ahead through Milsom’s boot with a penalty.
The response was immediate, however, as the home side gained position and for the first time got turnover ball in the Cornishmen's 22 and centre Luke Brown broke through several tackles to score. Full back Mark Nichols added the conversion.
Despite this the visitor's continued to snuff out their hosts ambition with solid defensive play and retook the lead through a further two Milsom penalties before half time.
The second half saw the Chiefs slowly begin to exert some measure of control and dominance but not without some effort. Centre Matt Taylor was unlucky not to get to the line early on before changes were made to up the intensity.
Mid-way through the half Taylor got the try to put the home side back in front when a move from a scrum five metres from the visitors line was won. Nichols applied extra pressure with a successful kick and it was game on.
The Wellington backs at last began to get quicker ball and were able to use their undoubted speed with wing Ben Williams stopped just short of the line after a flowing move.
Despite this the next score remained elusive until the final minutes when Chris Kitto won a lineout and a second drive at the subsequent ruck saw prop Ted Keeble get the ball down for an unconverted try.
The visitors still came back at their hosts but in truth never looked like crossing the home line. In the end Wellington ran out comfortable winners but not until they had ridden out early resistance from the solid visitors.
