Deputy Mayor Very Concerned About CCTV Cuts in Newquay

A councillor for a Cornish town has called plans to cut back the usage of the area's video surveillance system "very dangerous".
Cornwall Council has said the video surveillance system in Newquay would no longer have 24-hour manned monitoring after the end of March, because they have to make efficiency savings.
The CCTV system will continue recording but councillor Andy Hannan, who is also the deputy mayor, says this is not enough.
"I'm very concerned about [the cuts to Newquay's CCTV]. I get a big sense of security knowing the cameras are there and being watched," he said.
Mr Hannan also raised concerns that without being manned, the cameras would just focus on a single place, losing the important PTZ (pan, tilt, zoom) function that operators can use to focus them onto specific individuals or events.
In a four-week period at the end of 2010, Newquay's video surveillance system helped to detect 151 crimes in the area, according to local news website This is Cornwall.
