DESPITE being a player down, Newquay Ladies pulled out one of their best performances in the second round of the Woman's F.A. Cup at Mount Wise on Sunday.
Playing host to local rivals Plymouth Argyle, Newquay knew they had to start of with a good tempo.
Manager Alan Metters brought in a new system and Newquay started off brightly with Chloe Richards and Kayle Lane both looking sharp in attack.
Then on ten minutes, Richards was struck off the ball and reacted towards Stroud, Argyle’s full back.
This left the referee with no option but to send Richards from the field, but having not seen the incident leaving a very lucky Stroud to stay on the field.
Now being faced with playing the remaining 80 minutes with just ten players, Newquay continued to take the game to Argyle. Atkins, Salts and Barr were dominating the mid field and the back three of Dennet, Olde, and Captain Longsworth were looking a very strong unit winning nearly every header and challenge when called upon.
Kayle Lane was working hard as a lone striker and three times got shots off making the Argyle keeper work hard.
Newquay pushed their rivals deep into their half time and time again and just as it looked like Argyle’s defence was holding out, a strong header by Dennet played in Danni Salts, who with a sweet turn fed Kayle Lane to strike the ball past a static keeper to give the home side a deserved half time lead of 1 - 0.
At the start of the second half, Manager Metters brought on Sarah Mansfield, and personally thanked Kayle Lane for her first half effort.
Nicki Lake and Annie Richards were enjoying success down the flanks, Richards again having a great game and working the Argyle defence with some telling runs and crosses.
The second half mirrored the first with the ten man Newquay always in control. Alan used the bench well, and brought on Ellis Glanfield for the excellent Atkins who ran her self into the ground.
It was Glanfield who rose highest to head firmly a great free kick by Danni Barr on 80 minutes to put Newquay firmly in the driving seat, leaving a very dejected Argyle side to play out the remaining ten minutes.
To their credit, Plymouth pushed in the final minutes and a very tired Newquay gave away a corner in the 95 minute.
The referee spotted some shirt pulling and awarded Plymouth a last minute penalty which was despatched past Louise Gallway by the impressive Perry, making the final score 2-1 to Newquay, and sending them into the third round of the Women’s F.A. Cup where they have been drawn against Derby.
“Newquay walked away with a first class, and very rewarding win over their local rivals, and every player played an important part in this victory” commented manager Metters.
Newquay now turn their attention to the county cup with a home tie against Dobwalls on Sunday, before travelling to face Derby in the third round on the 6 February.
