Concern as Subway Seeks to Open up to 21 Hours a Day

SUBWAY sandwich shop in Newquay could soon be open up to 21 hours a day, sparking fresh fears that the town is degenerating into a 24-hour party town.

The owner of the fast food restaurant on Bank Street has applied to bring forward the morning opening time from 9am to 7am.

The popular branch already has a licence to close at 4am during peak season and 2am during the winter months.

Some residents of nearby Trebarwith Crescent claim they are regularly blighted by noise and litter from late-night revellers staggering home to guesthouses and surf lodges.

They say the problems will just get worse if the application succeeds as this could trigger a flood of requests from other establishments for round-the-clock opening.

However, the franchise owner, Harvey Brown, has hit back, saying the earlier opening time is aimed at attracting early-morning customers, such as commuters and dog-walkers, not clubgoers from the previous night.

Community campaigner Tracy Earnshaw, a resident of Trebarwith Crescent, told the Cornish Guardian: "I know we're close to the town centre and I expect to be disturbed but it's got progressively worse.

"By starting to sell food at 7am it's encouraging people to be out 24 hours a day. It's fine in a city centre but Newquay's centre has a massive residential population.

"If Subway gets permission for this then there will be just three hours in the day for residents to get some sleep, which will definitely impact on our quality of life.

'Party'

"It sometimes seems that there's a drive by some people in the police and council to turn Newquay into a 24-hour party capital, which I thought we were trying to move away from."

Mr Brown said he had received no objections from any authority and had discussed his plans with the police.

"We don't envisage people hanging around for three hours to get a sandwich," he said. "This was part of the discussions we had with the police. If we were asking to open at 5am, then they might have a point, but three hours is plenty of time for people to disperse.

"At that time of the morning there would be very few people still about from the night before. We are aiming at a different type of customer."

Mr Brown said that disruption due to noise would not be any worse either, as deliveries had always been made early in the morning with no complaints.

Mrs Earnshaw has contacted Geoff Brown, Cornwall councillor for Newquay Central, about her concerns.

Councillor Brown said he was still looking into the issue.

"What concerns me is the fact that the gap between opening and closing times is being closed up by another two hours," he said. "I would be happy with a 7am opening time if they closed a few hours earlier. Unfortunately this isn't a licence review and this won't be up for discussion."

Subway in Newquay has been in business for nine years and was one of the first to open in the country.

The deadline for representations regarding the plan is February 2.
