Newquay Landlord Fined For Fire Safety Breaches

A landlord from Newquay has been fined for numerous fire safety breaches at a house she let to tenants on St Mary’s Road in the seaside town.
Upon investigation of the multiple-occupancy property, officers from Cornwall Council’s Private Sector Housing Team found a total of thirteen fire safety offences. These included failures to fit adequate fire alarms, emergency lighting, fire doors and failing to supply and maintain other precautionary measures. The landlord was also unable to supply the required certificates concerning the electrical installation.
The landlord, Amanda de Gonville Morrison, was originally fined a total of £62,500 for these fire safety breaches, but this amount has now been drastically reduced in light of her financial situation and problems with ill health. It was revealed that not only was the landlord on the brink of bankruptcy; the property in question was also being repossessed.
Commenting on the case, Cornwall’s Council’s housing chief Mark Kaczmarek said:
“This case will serve as a reminder to landlords who fail to ensure their properties conform to legal requirements that the Housing Service will make every effort to bring them to book to protect the health, safety and welfare of tenants in private rented accommodation.”
